Department of English
Department of English
Advanced English communication skills to "spread the students' wings" across the global stage
Features of learning approach
Developing professionals to be active in global business using English.
Point1
Studying World Literature and World Englishes
English literature and the English language are no longer limited to the Anglosphere. In this department, we study literature and language as “world literature” and “world Englishes” from a variety of perspectives. Yoko Tawada, a specially appointed professor and bilingual writer in both Japanese and German, is our standard-bearer for world literature. Her workshops open up infinite possibilities of the world of languages.
Point2
Aiming to be an English teacher
Every year, a certain number of English-major students become junior or senior high school English teachers, not only in Yamanashi but also all over Japan.
To prepare for their teaching practice and teacher-employment exams, students hold regular study meetings on their own initiative and work hard together to develop their knowledge and skills.
Point3
Global Career Program (GCP)
This is a program specific to this department that focuses on students’ future careers. Students develop advanced communication skills, presentation skills, and other related skills by taking specific classes, by completing courses, and by studying business, Japanese culture, and other topics in English. Our aim is for students to attain a grade 1 level in the EIKEN test, a TOEIC score of 850 or higher, and/or a TOEFL (iBT) score of 100 or higher by the time of graduation.
Point4
Various chances available to go abroad
Studying abroad is encouraged. Off-campus classes such as “Current affairs in the Anglosphere” are available during long vacation breaks. And not only is there a number of study abroad programs at the university but we also introduce students to excellent programs outside of the university. Students can take advantage of adjusting their curriculums and/or distance learning for seminars to ensure they can graduate in four years. Online English seminar of University of Hawaii started in 2021.
