Providing practical solutions to community issues that modern society faces

Community based analysis and actions are essential to solving issues that the overall society faces, such as decreasing birthrates, the aging population and the growing demand for social security contributions. This department nurtures professionals that can accurately grasp the community issues from a local and global perspective and can contribute to a better community structure in Japan and other areas in the world.

Building a foundation of knowledge and acquiring skills for understanding issues and analysis

First and second year students use the knowledge from their high school studies in geography, history and civics and acquire the basic skills necessary to understand and analyze the issues of the local community. In addition, they learn from courses related to social sciences, humanities and global studies and develop a wide breadth of knowledge that forms the foundation for analyzing issues from various points of view.

A versatile and flexible four-course system

Students select one course for their third year from four course options: “Community management,” “Public policy,” “Environmental sociology” and “Education and culture.” The students join one of the four seminars that is held in each course, and during the next two years, the students explore their fields of specialization, improve their practical skills and write their graduation theses.

Refining four skills using active learning

In order to solve problems together with others, skills such as understanding the community, creativity, taking action and cooperation are needed. Starting from their first year, students focus on practical skills and an active learning approach such as group discussion and debate, which are integrated as much as possible into the curriculum in order to build solid skills.
